Bukka Raya I
(?-1377)
   A local prince of Kampila (in the Raichur Doab) who, along with his brother Harihara, was taken prisoner by the army of the Delhi sultanate, brought to Delhi, and converted to Islam. The two brothers were subsequently sent back to the south to restore the sultan's authority there. In 1336, they revolted and reverted to Hinduism. Harihara was crowned the king of Hastinavati (modern Hampi), which then formed the nucleus of what was to become the Vijayanagar Empire. Bukka succeeded to the throne of the newly established kingdom in 1356. His reign witnessed the beginning of a long-drawn-out tussle between the Bahmani kingdom and Vijayanagar for the control of Raichur Doab. Bukka I is credited with naming his capital Vijayanagar. He is reported to have restored harmony between the Vaishnavas and Jains. The Vijayanagar Empire was strong and prosperous at the end of his reign (1377).
